What crypto cards with staking rewards are

Many crypto cards tie their best rates and perks to staking — locking up a quantity of the issuer’s token to unlock a higher tier. This page ranks the cards we track that use staking, and explains how it works, what it really costs, and when it is worth it. Staking can meaningfully boost cashback, but it turns a card decision into a partly investment one, so it deserves a clear-eyed look.

How card staking works

You buy and lock up a set amount of the provider’s token to reach a tier that pays higher cashback and adds perks such as subscription rebates or lounge access. The stake is held for a defined period, during which you cannot spend it, and it is exposed to the token’s market price. Higher tiers require larger stakes; the top tiers can require substantial capital.

The real cost of staking

Staking has two costs: opportunity cost (capital locked and unusable) and price risk (the token can fall in value while staked). Neither shows up as a “fee,” but both are real. To judge a staking tier, estimate the extra cashback and perk value over a year at your actual spending, then compare it against the amount staked and the downside if the token drops.

When staking is worth it

Staking tends to make sense if you already want to hold the token for its own reasons, you spend enough for the boosted cashback to add up, and you are comfortable locking the capital. It tends not to make sense if you are staking purely to chase a rewards rate, or if the stake is large relative to the extra you would earn — in which case a no-annual-fee card may serve you better.

Token price risk

The single biggest consideration is exposure to the token. If its price falls, the effective cost of your tier rises and the value locked shrinks. Only stake what you would be comfortable holding in that token regardless of the card, and treat the cashback boost as a secondary benefit rather than a reason to buy the asset.

Fees and tax

Staking does not remove ordinary card costs — check the FX spread, ATM and top-up fees too. Staking rewards and token disposals can also have tax implications that vary by country. Keep records and treat this as general information, not advice.

How to choose

Compare the staking tiers above against your real spending and risk tolerance, and be honest about whether you would hold the token anyway. Model the return with the rewards calculator, narrow options with the card finder, or weigh two cards in the comparison tool.
